Fast 3v2 attack with transition: if they lose it, the waiting player comes on and the goal counts double
Linkalde exercise
How it works
- Who starts
- A1, from the blues, with the ball in his own half.
- Who takes part
- A1, A2 and A3 (blues) against R1 and R2 (reds); R3 waits on the touchline; two goalkeepers.
- What the ball does
- A1 dribbles and passes to A2; R1 cuts out the pass and dribbles to the left, R3 comes on, R1 passes to him and R3 shoots: double goal.
- How to score
- Goal in attack: one point. Goal in the transition after winning the ball: two points.
- When it ends
- The action ends with a goal, a shot or the ball going out; the series lasts four minutes.
- How it restarts
- The coach plays another ball to the team starting the next attack.
- How players rotate
- After each action, a player from the team that has just finished attacking goes out to wait.

Goal
Attack quickly with a numerical advantage and, on winning the ball, counterattack at once using the arrival of the waiting teammate.
Description
A 40 x 30 m rectangle with a goal and a goalkeeper at each end. Three blues attack the right-hand goal against two reds and must finish as quickly as possible. A third red waits outside, on the touchline. If the reds win the ball, they counterattack towards the left-hand goal and the waiting player comes on, so they also attack with three; a goal in that transition counts double. After each action, the coach plays in another ball and the waiting player repositions, so that the attacking team always has three.
Step by step
- 1
A1 dribbles towards the goal and A2 moves wide and high.
- 2
A1 passes to A2 and R1 launches himself to cut out the pass.
- 3
R1 wins the ball and dribbles to the left; R3 comes on from the touchline and R2 supports.
- 4
R1 passes to R3.
- 5
R3 shoots: goal in the transition, two points.
Rules
Attack in under ten seconds. Goal in attack: one point. Goal in the transition after winning the ball: two points. The waiting player only comes on when his team wins the ball.

Rotation and restart
After each action, one player from the team that has just finished attacking goes out to wait, and the other team starts the next attack.
Coaching points
- Attackers: fix a defender before passing.
- Defenders: one steps out and the other covers the pass.
- On winning the ball, look forward first.
- The waiting player, stay alert: set off the moment the ball is won.
Common mistakes
The attackers pass the ball around without fixing anyone.
How to correct: Dribble towards a defender and pass when he steps out.
After losing the ball, the attackers stop.
How to correct: Press or recover at once: the transition counts double.
The waiting player comes on late.
How to correct: Set off when the ball is won, not when he receives the pass.
Questions for the players
- “Who do you have to fix for the 3v2 to work?”
- “If they win it, what do you do in the first second?”
Levels
- A · easyNo time limit for the attack.
- B · standardAs described: ten seconds and a double goal in the transition.
- C · advancedSix seconds to attack and the waiting player comes on with a delay.
If you have fewer or more players
- With 6 fewer: 2v1 with one waiting. (2v1 + 1 with 2 goalkeepers)
- With more: Two groups that alternate on each action. (Two groups of 3v2 + 1 with 2 goalkeepers)
- With odd numbers: The extra player acts as a second waiting player.
Age
Variations
- Entry from the other wing. The waiting player stands on the opposite wing to force a switch of play.
- Recovering defence. One of the attackers who loses the ball may track back to defend the transition.
