6v4 attack with compulsory crosses from the wide zones and a release pass to the waiting teammate
Linkalde exercise
How it works
- Who starts
- A3, the blue pivot, with the ball.
- Who takes part
- Six blues (A1 to A6) attack against the line of four reds (R1 to R4) and the goalkeeper; R5 waits in the strip in the middle of the pitch.
- What the ball does
- A3 to A4, A4 to A5 in the right wide zone, R4 enters and A5 crosses; R2 cuts out the cross, passes to R1 and R1 plays long to R5, who is waiting.
- How to score
- A goal after a cross or a cutback from a wide zone: one point for the attackers. Winning the ball and passing to the waiting player: one point for the defenders.
- When it ends
- The move ends with a goal, a steal or the ball going out; the series lasts six minutes.
- How it restarts
- The coach gives a ball to the blue pivot.
- How players rotate
- Each series the roles of attackers and defenders are swapped, and the waiting player changes.

Goal
Defending: organise the line with shifting, cover and distances; attacking: create the 2v1 on the wing and cross with an advantage.
Description
Half pitch with a goalkeeper. Four red defenders form the line in front of the box. Six blues attack. On each side of the penalty area there is a wide zone that only one defender can enter, so the attackers can create a 2v1 and cross. To score, the move must come from a cross or a cutback from one of those zones. In the half behind the attackers, a red player waits in a strip and moves across it: if the defenders win the ball, they look to connect with him, and that is a point for them.
Step by step
- 1
A3 opens to A4.
- 2
A4 plays with A5, in the right wide zone.
- 3
R4 steps into the zone to close down A5 and A6 attacks the box.
- 4
A5 crosses.
- 5
R2 anticipates and cuts out the cross.
- 6
R2 passes to R1 and R5 moves in his strip to give a passing line.
- 7
R1 plays long to R5: point for the defenders.
Rules
Only one defender can enter each wide zone. A goal only counts after a cross or a cutback from a wide zone. Winning the ball and passing to the waiting player: one point for the defenders. The waiting player cannot leave his strip.

Rotation and restart
Each series the roles are swapped: four attackers form the defensive line and the defenders attack; the waiting player changes every series.
Coaching points
- Defence: shift towards the wing without opening the centre.
- Only one goes out to the wide zone; the rest close the box.
- On winning the ball, head up: look for the waiting player.
- Attack: arrive in the box with two players at each cross.
Common mistakes
Two defenders go out to the same wide zone.
How to correct: The nearest one goes out; the others shift and cover.
The line falls apart when the cross comes in.
How to correct: Keep the distance and height between defenders.
After winning the ball it is cleared without looking.
How to correct: Look for the waiting teammate.
Questions for the players
- “Who goes out to the wide zone and who covers?”
- “When you win the ball, where is the waiting player?”
Levels
- A · easyNo waiting player: on winning the ball, the defenders bring it out by dribbling.
- B · standardAs described.
- C · advancedAn attacker may drop back to press the waiting player.
If you have fewer or more players
- With 10 fewer: 5v3 with the same structure. (5v3 + 1 with goalkeeper)
- With more: 7v5 with a defensive midfielder in front of the line. (7v5 + 1 with goalkeeper)
- With odd numbers: The extra player is a second waiting player.
Age
Variations
- Free goal. A goal without a cross also counts, but is worth half.
- Two waiting players. Two reds in the strip so the exit after winning the ball is easier.
