Goal

Finish crosses with a coordinated arrival and react instantly once the move is over, both in the recovery run and in the counter-attack.

Description

Half pitch with one goal in the box and another on the halfway line, each with its own goalkeeper. A channel is marked with cones on the right wing. Two red attackers and a red winger in the channel attack two yellow defenders. The halfway-line goalkeeper plays the ball to the winger, who dribbles down the channel and crosses; the two attackers finish in the box. As soon as it ends, the goalkeeper in the box throws out to the two defenders, who counter-attack towards the halfway-line goal, and the two attackers must recover to stop the goal. Everything at maximum speed.

Step by step

  1. 1

The halfway-line goalkeeper plays to EX, in the channel.

  2. 2

EX dribbles and crosses; D1 and D2 attack the near and far post.

  3. 3

    D1 shoots.

  4. 4

The goalkeeper in the box immediately throws to Y1, who plays with Y2.

  5. 5

D1 and D2 recover; Y2 shoots at the halfway-line goal.

Rules

The winger can only play inside the channel. Defenders cannot enter the channel. The counter-attack starts as soon as the shot is over, without waiting. Eight seconds at most for each action.

Rotation and restart

After the two actions, the attackers become defenders, the defenders go to the line and the winger comes in as an attacker.

Coaching points

  • Finishers: one to the near post and one to the far post, never both to the same one.
  • Winger: cross before they get to close you down.
  • When the shot is over, your head is already on the recovery run.
  • Defenders: delay and cover each other, do not both step out.

Common mistakes

  • Both finishers attack the same post.

How to correct: Share the posts out before the cross comes in.

  • After the shot they celebrate or complain and get back to defend too late.

How to correct: Sprint back as soon as the ball leaves the box.

  • Both defenders go for the ball.

How to correct: One presses and the other covers the space between the finishers.

Questions for the players

  • “Which post do you attack if your teammate goes to the near one?”
  • “What is the first thing you do when your shot is over?”

Levels

  • A · easyOnly one defender at the finish and no counter-attack.
  • B · standardAs described: 3v2 and a 2v2 counter-attack.
  • C · advancedThree defenders and six seconds per action.

If you have fewer or more players

  • With 6 fewer: Only one defender: 3v1 at the finish and a 1v2 counter-attack. (3v1 with 2 goalkeepers)
  • With more: A second winger in a channel on the left wing; the wings alternate. (3v2 on two wings)
  • With odd numbers: The extra player waits in the line and joins the next trio.

Variations

  • From the middle. One action goes down the channel and the next through the middle, with a pass between the lines.
  • Second attack counts double. After the counter-attack, the halfway-line goalkeeper plays out to the reds again: a goal in that second action counts double.
