How it works

Who starts
A1, first in the left line, and A5, first in the right line, each with a ball.
Who takes part
Eight players: two lines of two (A1 and A2 on the left, A5 and A6 on the right), two inside players (I1 and I2) and two outside players (E1 at the top and E2 at the bottom).
What the ball does
A1 passes to I1, I1 sets it back to A1 facing play, A1 plays to E1, E1 gives the wall pass back and A1 passes long to A6, in the right line. A5's ball does the same along the bottom with I2 and E2 and ends with A2.
How to score
No scoring: what counts is the quality of the pass and the two balls moving at the same time.
When it ends
The action, when both balls reach the opposite line; the set, after four minutes.
How it restarts
The first in each line start again at the same time with the ball they have received.
How players rotate
A1 moves to inside, I1 to outside and E1 to the right line; on the other side, A5 to inside, I2 to outside and E2 to the left line.

Goal

Improve short and medium passing, the set-back facing play and the wall pass, with the focus needed when two balls are moving at the same time.

Description

A 40 x 40 m square with eight players. In the middle of the left and right sides there is a line of two players; 10 m in from each line, an inside player; and in the middle of the top and bottom sides, an outside player. Two balls start at once, one from each line. The first in line passes to their inside player, who sets it back facing play; they play to the outside player on their side (the left line to the top, the right line to the bottom), play a wall pass with them and finish with a long pass to the opposite line. The two balls cross in the middle, so you must look before passing and respect the timing.

Step by step

  1. 1

A1 passes to I1 and moves forward on the diagonal.

  2. 2

I1 sets it back facing play.

  3. 3

A1 plays to E1, at the top.

  4. 4

E1 returns the wall pass into the space ahead of A1, who keeps running.

  5. 5

A1 passes long to A6, in the right line. At the same time, A5 does the same along the bottom with I2 and E2 and ends with A2.

Rules

Both balls start on the signal, at the same time. The inside and outside players play one-touch if they can. The final pass goes to the line on the opposite side.

Equipment

  • 4 cones
  • 2 balls per circuit

Recommended times by goal

Rotation and restart

The player who leaves the line moves to inside, the inside player moves to outside and the outside player goes to the opposite line.

Coaching points

  • Start together: the challenge is for the two balls to cross.
  • Firm pass to your teammate's good foot.
  • Open your body before receiving so you can play without stopping the ball.
  • Call it: «facing», «wall».

Common mistakes

  • One ball starts before the other and the circuit loses its symmetry.

How to correct: Start on the signal and adjust the rhythm by watching the other side.

  • The inside player stops the ball before setting it back.

How to correct: Set it back first time, with the body open towards the player arriving.

  • The wall pass arrives behind the runner.

How to correct: Pass into the space ahead, where they are going to be.

Questions for the players

  • “Where is the other ball when you make your long pass?”
  • “Which way do you need to open your body to set it back facing play?”

Levels

  • A · easyOne ball only and free touches.
  • B · standardAs described: two balls at once and two touches at most.
  • C · advancedEverything one-touch and a short dribble after the wall pass.

If you have fewer or more players

  • With 6 fewer: Only one player in each line: the one who finishes stays in the line. (Double circuit with 6)
  • With 10 more: Three players per line. (Double circuit with 10)
  • With odd numbers: The extra player joins a line; that line starts with three.

Variations

  • Third man. The inside player does not set it back: they lay it off facing the outside player, and the outside player finds the player from the line, who is already running.
  • Final dribble. After the wall pass, the player dribbles five metres before the long pass.
