How it works

Who starts
A1, the red defender with the ball, top left; B1 and C1, the blue attackers, at the bottom.
Who takes part
Three groups of two (A1 and A2, B1 and B2, C1 and C2) and the goalkeeper P.
What the ball does
A1 passes to B1, B1 lays it off to C1; C1 passes to B1 overlapping (who shoots) or dribbles A1 and shoots.
How to score
One point if the shot ends in a goal; one point for the defender if he wins the ball or blocks the shot.
When it ends
When the shot is taken and the goalkeeper or the defender stops the ball.
How it restarts
A new ball at the feet of defender A2, who passes again to B2.
How players rotate
The groups turn anticlockwise: A goes to the C spot, C to the B spot and B to the A spot.

Goal

Train the attacker's decision with the help of a teammate: hold the defender, wait for the overlap and choose between pass and dribble to shoot with an advantage.

Description

Half pitch with a goal and a goalkeeper. Three rotating groups: defenders (reds) top left, about 20 m from the goal; B attackers (blues) on the right, 36 m out; C attackers (blues) on the left, in the centre, 36 m out. Each group has two players in the drawing and the first in each spot is A1, B1 and C1. A1 has the ball and starts by playing a long diagonal pass to B1. B1 lays the ball off first time to face C1. As soon as C1 receives, A1 comes out to close him down and C1 dribbles towards him to hold him, while B1 overlaps on the outside, behind C1, to receive if called. C1 decides on what he sees: if A1 steps up and leaves a lane, he passes to B1, who shoots first time; if A1 stays still or hesitates, C1 dribbles past him and shoots himself. After the shot the rebound is collected and the groups rotate.

Step by step

  1. 1

    A1 passes diagonally to B1.

  2. 2

B1 lays the ball off first time to C1, who receives facing play.

  3. 3

A1 comes out to close down C1; C1 dribbles towards A1 and B1 overlaps on the outside, behind C1.

  4. 4

C1 decides: pass to B1 or dribble past A1.

  5. 5

The free player shoots at goal.

  6. 6

The groups rotate: A goes to the C spot, C to the B spot and B to the A spot.

Rules

Defender A1 cannot come out until B1 lays the ball off to C1. B1 does not overlap until C1 starts dribbling. The shot must be taken before the ball reaches the edge of the box. If A1 wins the ball, he passes to the attacking group on the right. The goalkeeper saves and the ball is collected for the next player.

Rotation and restart

After each shot the three groups rotate: the defenders go to the C spot, the C attackers to the B spot and the B attackers move to defend.

Coaching points

  • Dribble towards the defender to hold him before deciding.
  • The overlapping player runs hard and wide, without calling too early.
  • If the defender steps up, pass; if he hesitates, dribble.
  • Shoot first time and to the near or far post.

Common mistakes

  • C1 passes early without holding the defender.

How to correct: Wait for A1 to close in so the pass is given at the right moment.

  • B1 stops behind C1.

How to correct: Run on the outside so there is always a passing option.

  • The shot goes wide.

How to correct: Body over the ball and the standing foot beside it.

Questions for the players

  • “What does the defender do that makes you choose the pass?”
  • “How do you let your teammate know you are overlapping?”

Levels

  • A · easyPassive defender who only approaches slowly and a short shooting distance.
  • B · standardDefender who closes down decisively, as described.
  • C · advancedActive defender who can win the ball, with a two-second limit to decide.

If you have fewer or more players

  • With 4 fewer: Only one player per spot, with immediate rotation. (2v1 with overlap without queues)
  • With more: Queues of three behind each spot, or a second goal with another goalkeeper. (2v1 with overlap in queues)
  • With odd numbers: The extra player collects balls and takes them to A2.

Variations

  • From the other side. The attackers line up on the left and the defender comes out from the other angle.
  • Active defender. A1 can win the ball and, if he does, attacks the goal with A2.
