2v1 with an overlap in 35x30 m: one slows down, the other overlaps on the wing, they beat the defender and pass without touching a second one
Linkalde exercise
How it works
- Who starts
- A, blue, with the ball, in the top left corner.
- Who takes part
- Eight players: A, B, D1 and D2 in the top half; C, E, D3 and D4 in the bottom one.
- What the ball does
- A passes to B, B dribbles and passes back to A, who beats D1 and passes to C avoiding D2.
- How to score
- No scoring; complete actions are counted.
- When it ends
- After four minutes of each series.
- How it restarts
- C starts the action in the bottom half with the ball received.
- How players rotate
- The attackers swap roles after each action and the defenders by time.

Goal
Start working as a team of two attackers with an overlap and choose between passing and dribbling when beating a defender.
Description
A 35 x 30 m space divided into two halves, one at the top and one at the bottom, with a dashed line. Two groups of four do the same action, one in each half. Top half: attacker A starts with the ball next to the left wing; his teammate B waits opposite, on the bottom wing of his half; D1 is the defender and D2 is a second defender who does not leave two cones set 3 m apart on the centre line. A passes to B and runs along the top wing, overlapping him. B dribbles slowly towards D1 to give A time; when A is already ahead of B, B passes to him and A beats D1. A dribbles to the centre and passes the ball to player C, who waits to start the action in the bottom half, avoiding D2 with the pass. The bottom half is the same, but facing the other way, and its last pass goes back to the top half.
Step by step
- 1
A passes to B and runs along the top wing.
- 2
B dribbles slowly towards D1 to slow the play down.
- 3
B passes to A, who is already ahead.
- 4
A beats D1 and dribbles to the centre.
- 5
A passes to C, avoiding D2.
Rules
A passes to B first time. B does not pass until A is ahead. D1 defends passively at first and D2 only moves between his cones. The final pass must go along the ground without touching D2. Each action is done in turns.
Equipment
- 8 cones
- Balls
- Red bibs
Physical focus
Recommended times by goal
- Technical: 3 × 4' · rest 1' · Medium intensityOrientativo
Rotation and restart
After each action the roles are swapped: A and B swap with each other (purple arrows) and every three minutes D1 and D3 are replaced by an attacker.
Coaching points
- Pass and run, do not stand watching.
- The player on the ball slows down until his teammate is ahead.
- Choose pass or dribble depending on how the defender opens up.
- Pass along the ground and away from the second defender.
Common mistakes
B passes before A has overlapped him.
How to correct: Wait until A is ahead.
A runs tight against B and gets in the way.
How to correct: Run wide, 4 or 5 m from B.
The final pass goes between D2's cones.
How to correct: Pass round the side, outside the cones.
Questions for the players
- “When is it in your interest to slow down and when to speed up?”
- “On which side is it better for the teammate to overlap?”
Levels
- A · easyVery passive defenders and A receives standing still.
- B · standardDefender with light opposition.
- C · advancedActive defender and B decides alone between passing and dribbling.
If you have fewer or more players
- With 6 fewer: With six players only one half is used, with the final pass to a fixed player. (One 2v1 half)
- With 10 more: With ten players a fourth relief player is added on each side. (Two groups of five)
- With odd numbers: The extra player waits in a corner and comes in as a relief.
Age
Variations
- Other spaces. The pitch is reduced to 28 x 24 m.
- Another combination. Instead of the overlap, a wall pass is played.
